Frequency counts at forebears.io offer an estimate of the number of the people in countries worldwide who hold the selected surnames today. Our experience is that the counts provide a good reflection of the surnames that we study. The estimates for Baldacchino and its variant forms are shown below for countries with at least 10 people who hold the Baldacchino or variant surnames.

Baldacchino is the strongly preferred spelling of the surnames, present in all of the listed countries except Cuba and the Philippines where only the variant name Baldoquin has been found. Although the Baldacchino surname originated in Sicily, Baldacchino migrants reached the small islands of Malta likely by the 14th century. Malta now holds almost double the number of Baldacchinos of any other country in the world.
The presence or absence of a significant number of Ballacchinos or Ballachinos in these countries helps to distinguish countries with migrants from Sicily versus migrants from Malta since the Ballacchino variant name was never present in Malta. Italians likely migrated to Germany, Switzerland, Argentina and Brazil while the Maltese migrated to France and likely Belgium by way of North Africa from the 1800s and to England, Australia and Gibraltar. The United States and Canada are known to be the destinations of both Italian and Maltese migrants. The Baldoquins of Cuba are known to descend from a Maltese migrant and the origin of the Baldoquins of the Phillipines is not yet known.
